 United Healthecare에서 메일이 와서 뜯어보았다.

돈내라는건가 했는데, 그건 아니고 보험료가 작년에는 이정도였는데 올해는 이만큰 더 올라간다는 내용이었다. 

결과적으로 한달에 보험사에서 가져가는 비용이 $5,100. 일년이면 $61,200. 지금 환율로 계산해보면 일년에 팔천팔백만원이다.

신명기 8장 2절 "이는 너를 낮추시며..."

 네 하나님 여호와께서 이 사십년 동안에 너로 광야의 길을 걷게 하신 것을 기억하라 이는 너를 낮추시며 너를 시험하사 네 마음이 어떠한지 그 명령을 지키는지 아니 지키는지 알려하심이라.

1. 너를 낮추시며

애굽에서 종되었던 백성들은 이미 가장 낮은 레벨의 계층으로 살던 사람들이고 제한된 자유, 고된 노동의 환경 속에 있었던 사람들이었다. 또한 여호와는 모세에게 내가 그들의 부르짖음을 들었노라라고 말씀하셨다. 그 부르짖음은 고통 속에서, 그러나 그 고통을 벗어날 그 어떤 길도 찾을 수 없는 절망 속에서 나오는 비명이었을 것이다. 그런데, 왜 이런 고통 속에 있던 사람들을 더 낮추셨어야 했을까? 그것도 40년 동안이나. 

종의 신분으로 살던 사람들이라서 고통 속에 있었을것이라 생각하지만 실상 그들은 그것을 그다지 큰 고통이라고 생각하지 않았던 것일까? 400년간 애굽에서 종살이를 했던 민족이라면 그 종족의 모든 사람들과 그들의 할아버지, 할아버지의 할아버지, 그들이 만나볼 수 있었던 모든 사람들은 이미 그 환경이 그들의 모든 직, 간접적인 경험의 전부였을 것이고, 그들의 개인의 삶, 문화, 의식을 지배하고 있었을 것이다. 

어떠면 이들에게 자유라는 것, 노동 후에 잠시 가족들과 갖게 되는 제한된 자유가 아닌, 궁극적이고 본질적인 자유는 쉽게 받아들이고 이해하기 힘든것이었을 수 있다. 자유를 누리지 못해 자유를 몰랐을것이라는 무시하는 의미가 아니다. 자유는 인간의 본성에 기인하는것, 속박하는 그 무언가가 존재하지 않는다는 소극적인 의미에서 볼 때, 그 과거가 어떠했던지간에 자유를 누릴 수 없을것이라는 것은 억측이다. 하지만, 자유를 그러한 여집합으로만 정의되어지지 않는다. 개인의 무한한 자유는 타인의 무한한 자유와 동시에 존재하는 법이 없다. 그래서 자유는 상호적인 것이고, 언어적인 것이고, 소통해야 하고 이해되어져야 한다. 

제한된, 그래서 본질적으로 일그러진 자유만을 경험하던 사람들에게 보다 높은 차원의 자유를  선사하기 위한 과정, 방법으로서 여호와께서 그들에게 하신 일이 40년간의 광야 생활, 낮추시고 시험하신 것들이 아닐까. 제한 없는 자유, 즉 무엇이건 맘 가는대로 행하는 것은 위에서 말한 바를 따르면 결국 타인과의 단절을 통해 자신만이 홀로 존재해야 할 때에만 가능할 것이고, 그것은 여호와의 존재마저 받아들이지 않아야 하는 것이다. 타인과, 여호와와 함께 공존하기 위해서는 자발적인 자유의 제한이 필요하고 그것이 바로 스스로를 낮추는 것이었다. 

2. 지키는지 아니 지키는지 알려하심이라

과연 그들이 지킬지 지키지 안을지 여호와께서 모르셨을것인가? 아마도 아셨을것이다. 그러나 여호와는 그것을 백성들이 스스로 목도하도록 하시고 싶으셨을것이다. 

Boundary... working on

There has been ongoing efforts to interconnect or fuse two or more different fields of science or technologies under one larger umbrella of study in order to expand the boundary of understanding or extend the possibility of new findings such as physicists working for the medical development using particle accelerators. But then, the question we can ask when we move one step back is that why we have such fields of studies from the beginning? When and how we define the study called "Physics"?

The easiest understandable group of numbers might be "Natural numbers" because this is directly related our physical experience. Whereas integers or irrational numbers are a bit harder to understand because these are derivatives of our thinking, or extended definition.

Among the four basic operations, deduction, multiplication and division are not born together with the addition. Long time ago, in the beginning of history, we might not need any deduction, multiplication or division. Human didn't need to deduct something from other things when there had been no deprivation. Human didn't need to multiply when they can just add whatever they need at the moment.

Architecture of New York - #1 : 1165 Broadway

1165 Broadway

Designed by Charles Mellon in 1867 as a five story hotel

In the morning of a winter day, my bus arrived at the Port Authority Terminal much earlier than usual, and I decided to walk down to the office. I walked down as usual, which  is to take Broadway. Soon after passed Korea Town, I found an interesting facade which I didn't remember whether I saw before or not. Taking almost half the block along the Broadway, This building is about five story low, but quite wide compared to others around it. Columns of bay windows were a strong character and overall proportion and the amount of decoration was well designed. Surely the existence of this building is more than strong enough to draw my attention and interest. Immediately I thought I wanted to pay more attention to these kind of hidden gems on the street. Not very much famous like those built by star-architects recently but have stood a long time bearing the history of all the changes around them with their own characters. This building is my first finding.
